It is said that when mountaineer Inosuke Saegusa and his party climbed this mountain for the first time in July 1908, they asked a local guide the name of the mountain. The guide replied “Goryo”,so Saegusa translated it as “五竜” (Five Dragons) and spread it to the public.
There are several theories about the origin of the name “GORYO”. One theory suggests that the snow pattern that appears on the northeast side near the peak looks just like the Takedabishi, the family crest of Takeda Shingen, who ruled this area during the Sengoku period. The local called it “GORYO” (御菱) which means “the family crest of the lord”. Another theory suggests that on the map of the Ecchu Area (now Toyama), this mountain is labelled as “Ushirotateyama” (後立山) as it is right behind Mt. Tateyama. If you use Onyomi (Chinese way to pronounce Kanji) to pronounce “後立”, that will become “GORYU”.
