GOODS

Hakuba Clinic, Showa University Faculty of Medicine

Opening period: Mid-July to mid-August

The Showa University Hakuba Clinic located at Hakuba Sanso Lodge was established in 1931 with the aim of promoting mountain medical care and improving alpine health and safety.
Although activities were interrupted at times during the war, the clinic has continued its work almost every year since then.
Based on its long-standing philosophy of volunteer service, the clinic is still operated today by doctors and medical students who provide medical care to climbers.

[Advice from the Clinic]
Every year, more than 400 climbers visit the clinic at Mt. Hakuba during the five-week operating period.
More than half of these cases are related to altitude sickness, which can often be prevented with proper preparation and care.
To help ensure a safe and enjoyable climb, please keep the following in mind:

Get plenty of sleep the night before your climb.
Do not start climbing if you are feeling unwell.
Drink plenty of fluids while hiking.
Change out of wet clothing as soon as possible.
After arriving at the lodge, avoid going straight to bed—take a short walk or practice deep breathing to help your body adjust.
Alcohol affects people more strongly at high altitude, so drink in moderation.

All of us at the clinic sincerely wish every climber a safe, healthy, and enjoyable mountain experience.
